Aston Villa are feeling the squeeze. Why don't I care about PSR?
Profit and sustainability rules D-Day is right around the corner. Whatever.
There are two things I know about profit and sustainability rules: how they work and how little I care about them.
The Premier League should be alarmed by that. Lots of supporters opposed to its profit and sustainability rules (PSR) are just not on board with football clubs having their spending restricted at all. Not me.
I’m in favour of financial limits on clubs. In fact, I’d advocate for a level of regulation the Premier League clubs would never consider imposing on themselves. So, if I’m nonplussed, the rules aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do.
The matter of whether the rules are intended to do what they’re supposed to do is for another post on another day and, honestly, from another writer. I’m not a conspiracy theorist when it comes to this sort of thing.
The clubs whose advantage was already entrenched weren’t oblivious to the unintended positive consequences but I’ve always been of the belief that the Premier League is more likely to be cackhanded than corrupt. Many supporters of its clubs loudly disagree.
Nevertheless, as the all-important June 30th deadline approaches and with Aston Villa yet to make the player sale or sales needed to avoid a breach that now seems inevitable, it’s the only topic that matters at Villa Park.
But I don’t care.
