We’re two games into pre-season and the results are testing supporters’ resolve to rise above the score and see the process at work.

Aston Villa have been beaten in their first two friendlies but there are many more to come. Unai Emery is exploring every nook and cranny of his Villa squad and the focus at this early stage is mostly on fitness and high-minded troubleshooting.

Villa were beaten 3-1 at Hansa Rostock on Saturday, conceding two late goals with a hugely inexperienced eleven on the pitch at the Ostseestadion.

Emery named a slightly more experienced starting eleven than he did at Walsall a few days earlier and gave goalkeeper Marco Bizot his first game in a Villa shirt but there were mass changes at half time again and the purpose of the run-out was clear.
