Never doubt Unai Emery, not even in a dead rubber. The difference between fourth and fifth in the Premier League isn’t wholly insignificant but the truth is it meant more to AFC Bournemouth than anyone else on Sunday.
Yet Aston Villa showed up at Manchester City and sweated out their hangovers with a 2-1 win, denying the sixth-placed Cherries a place in the Champions League and ensuring their own status above Liverpool in fourth.
And, honestly, fair play to them for that. I didn’t care one jot about this match but I’m full of admiration for the fact that Emery is the kind of manager who did.
This was Villa’s first league double over City since 1962-63 and the first win there in a league match for nineteen years.
