A 2-0 win on the night and a relatively comfortable 3-0 scoreline on aggregate set up a Europa League quarter-final against Serie A side Bologna.

Aston Villa beat Bologna earlier in the Europa League campaign, their first win of any description this season, but there’s water under the bridge for both teams since then. Bologna’s defeat of fellow Italian outfit Roma in the round of 16 was no joke.

Villa knocked out Lille without much fuss. Most of the Ligue 1 team’s chances were snared by Villa’s offside line, which was near-enough perfect in both legs. This was a professional job done professionally and Villa’s reward is a step closer to their end goal.
