Ollie Watkins' spectacular header gave Villa the advantage in the Europa League round of 16
It wasn’t a thriller. It wasn’t emphatic. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t impressive. It was, for now at least, enough.
Aston Villa won 1-0 at Lille in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16, taking them into next week’s second leg at Villa Park with an advantage thanks to an overdue goal from striker Ollie Watkins.
Villa seldom tested Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer but Watkins’ deft looping header turned a long pass out of defence into an important victory. It’s imperative that Villa get through this round and the other English teams proved this week that away wins in Europe aren’t easy to come by.
