The Holy Trinity: Aston Villa conclusions from Premier League comeback v West Ham
Hammers fail to burst the bubble as Villa make it nine wins in a row
Winning six Premier League matches in a row isn’t easy. No other team has managed it in 2025/26, which is as good an explanation as any for this absurd turnaround in fortunes.
Aston Villa hadn’t managed it before either. They have now. Sunday’s 3-2 win against West Ham United in the Premier League was a pretty good encapsulation of what Villa have become under Unai Emery this season.
This trip to London revealed it all: all the weaknesses and vulnerabilities, all the consequences of just one or two players off their game, and the smattering of world-class moments that have kept Villa’s run going even when they insist on shooting themselves in the foot.
Coming from behind to win away games is no joke. Winning matches that might have gone the other way is a happy trait to have. This, though, was especially squeaky for a number of reasons.
Villa needed to be smart against West Ham. In some ways, Emery caught Nuno Espírito Santo on the hop. But there were some real lapses against West Ham, lapses they punished, and Villa needed three.
They won’t get them every time. This was a big, big win in the circumstances.
Here’s your Holy Trinity of match conclusions.
