Villa are toddling towards a Champions League return and took a positive step at Villa Park on Sunday

It’s not all that often we can say Aston Villa turned up and delivered exactly what was needed. That’s what happened against Lille last Thursday and again when West Ham United visited Villa Park on Sunday.

Villa beat the Hammers 2-0 in the Premier League, putting themselves six points inside the expected Champions League places with seven matches remaining. We know from their recent form that there is a world of work ahead of them, but this game was just what the doctor ordered.

Perhaps above all else, it was fantastic to see such big performances from Ollie Watkins and Amadou Onana, not their first by any means but beautifully timed steps up. A little competition can go a long way.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all dropped points before Unai Emery’s team kicked a ball. For once, Villa took their chance.
