Wolverhampton Wanderers have won twice in the Premier League this season and being on the wrong end of one of those wins is a humiliating experience that should warrant a forthright response.
Aston Villa have been drifting towards this for a few weeks now and manager Unai Emery cannot hide from a horror show of a performance and a result that’s embarrassing on paper but was thoroughly deserved.
Returning to the Champions League is Villa’s stated target for the season and they’re losing their grip on it.
Their recent Premier League form isn’t just leaving them vulnerable to the chasing teams behind them. It’s threatening to make the Europa League last-sixteen tie against Lille a formidable challenge too.
The consequences of missing out this season don’t bear thinking about, and would be all the more painful for the fact that a Champions League place has been in Villa’s hands for so long.
There is still time. There is still quality in the team and the dugout. It’s still in Villa’s control. But it’s time to stop avoidably leaving points on the table.
