The Holy Trinity: Aston Villa conclusions after disappointing home draw against Leeds United
Villa needed a late equalising goal to avoid another damaging Premier League defeat but drop points at home again
When these teams met at Elland Road, Leeds United were beaten in part by a brilliant Morgan Rogers free kick.
Aston Villa fell behind to another special set piece against Leeds at Villa Park on Saturday, Anton Stach finding the top corner from distance to give the visitors the advantage in what was otherwise a tight game. Tammy Abraham swept in the equaliser to salvage something from it.
Dropping points at home at the current rate is disappointing, not only in isolation but because Villa have become accustomed to not doing it. Injuries to key players are the obvious cause – not an excuse I’m willing to allow, but clearly something that’s having an effect.
That’s no surprise. Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and John McGinn are top-class footballers. Losing them all would hurt any team in the Premier League and Villa don’t have nearly the same depth some of those can draw upon.
But this is where we are. This is the test. Unai Emery and his players will need to find a way to win games or their Champions League hopes will disintegrate.
